Choosing a Classroom Pet
There are many species, subspecies and varieties of pets and plants. The supplier should provide the scientific name along with the common name of the species you are considering. Some plants may come with hitchhikers in the roots or the soil. These accidental plants and animals may be invasive, so it’s a good idea to check for unwanted visitors before planting. Inspect the contents and packaging that arrives with your organism. Seal unwanted seeds, plants and packing material in a plastic bag before discarding in the trash. Don’t compost any non-native plants because their seeds and other plant parts may spread.
Invest in secure habitat for your pets. Reptile and amphibian tanks should have secure lids, and small animal enclosures should be sturdy enough to prevent accidental opening or damage from chewing.
